Tragic Discovery: Five Skiers Found Dead Near Zermatt Resort
Rescuers recover bodies in the Valais Alps following alert from climbers about abandoned skis.
The bodies of five skiers have been discovered in the Valais Alps, close to the luxury Zermatt resort after a tragedy unfolded on the challenging ascent to Rimpfischhorn, a 4,199-meter peak. Emergency services responded after climbers notified them about several pairs of unattended skis spotted near the summit.
Rescuers conducted thorough aerial and ground searches, ultimately leading to the recovery of the skiers' bodies on the Adler Glacier, situated below the summit. According to a statement from local police in Valais, the victims were found at different altitudes amidst avalanche debris, indicating the perilous nature of their environment. Three of the skiers were located in one vicinity, while the other two were discovered higher on a narrow snow patch, showcasing the difficult conditions of the area.
During the search, a fifth pair of skis was located, confirming that the skiers had been traveling as a group of five. Their identities have not been disclosed, pending notification of their families. In light of these discoveries, the public prosecutor's office has initiated an investigation into the tragic occurrence.
Zermatt, known for its premium Alpine experience, attracts discerning skiers from across Europe, including the UK. However, the route to Rimpfischhorn is aimed at experienced climbers, typically requiring a five-hour trek from the resort, often demanding an overnight stay in a mountain hut. Skiers usually begin their ascent from Zermatt, taking lifts to Blauherd at an elevation of 2,570 meters.
In a separate incident, Air Zermatt was also engaged in a complex mountain rescue on the Fiescherhörner on Friday night, where four climbers found themselves stranded due to challenging weather conditions. An initial evacuation effort was thwarted by fog and high winds, but a second attempt around midnight successfully brought all four climbers to safety.
