Anti-Hamas Sentiment Grows in Gaza Amid Increasing Public Dissent

As protests against Hamas swell, Palestinians decry the group's grip on power in a strife-ridden Gaza.

Amid increasing protests, the people of Gaza are openly defying Hamas, blaming the group for their prolonged suffering and calling for an end to its oppressive rule.

The streets of Gaza are witnessing a surge in public dissent against Hamas, the militant group that has held power for nearly two decades. Chanting slogans such as "Hamas is garbage" and "Out! Out! Out!", protesters voice their frustration over the unbearable living conditions and ongoing violence that has characterized their lives for generations.

Moumen al-Natour, a lawyer and former political prisoner, highlights the misconception that equates Gaza with Hamas. "We didn't choose Hamas... Hamas must retreat," he asserts, emphasizing the crucial need for the international community to recognize the plight of the people rather than misrepresent their situation as support for Hamas.

Speaking from the rubble of his hometown, al-Natour underscores the importance of courage in speaking out against the totalitarian regime that frequently retaliates against dissenters. Just days ago, 22-year-old Oday al-Rubai was reportedly killed by militants shortly after participating in an anti-Hamas protest—a grim reminder of the dangerous consequences of opposing the group.

Al-Rubai's family and human rights organizations have condemned the violence, labeling it an extrajudicial killing and calling for accountability from the ruling party. His chilling videos prior to his death reveal the anxiety felt by many who fear for their lives when speaking out against the status quo.

Amin Abed, a former resident of Gaza now in Dubai, also reflects on his harrowing experience with Hamas militants, expressing a belief that their hold on power is beginning to weaken. From afar, he remains engaged with protesters who, emboldened by desperation after a year and a half of unrelenting airstrikes, are now standing firm against Hamas aggression.

The northern region of Gaza, particularly Beit Lahiya, has seen some of the most fervent opposition as residents recently prevented Hamas forces from using civilian properties for military actions. Eyewitness accounts reveal audacity amongst locals, who are increasingly unwilling to accept Hamas's threats and are demanding a halt to the violence that has decimated their homes and communities.

Though protests remain fraught with peril—many have lost their lives for speaking out—the growing public dissent indicates that Hamas's dominance is increasingly being challenged. As frustration mounts towards both Israel and Hamas, the complex realities of life in Gaza reveal a populace yearning for change and liberation from the shackles of violence that have marred their existence for too long.
