China Enhances Visa-Free Transit Stays to Boost Tourism
China's new travel policy now allows tourists to stay up to 10 days visa-free, signaling a shift in tourism strategy.
In a recent move aimed at rejuvenating its tourism industry, the Chinese government announced a significant extension of visa-free transit periods for international visitors. As of now, tourists traveling through China can remain in the country for up to ten days without the need for a visa, a notable increase from the previous maximum of three to six days, depending on the point of entry.
This policy change reflects China's broader strategy to welcome tourists back to its borders after a prolonged period of strict travel restrictions during the pandemic and amid ongoing geopolitical challenges. The government issued an invitation for foreign visitors to come and experience the cultural richness of China, emphasizing the country’s readiness to host international travelers in what it describes as a new era.
Under the newly approved measures, travelers from 54 countries—including the United States—can enjoy the extended stay only if they are transiting through designated airports. In a further effort to create accessibility, China has added 21 new entry points to the existing 39, allowing for greater flexibility in travel itineraries. Previously, tourists were confined to the region they entered through, but the revised regulations now permit movement across 24 provinces where visa-free travel is allowed.
This change is part of a broader push by the Chinese government to reinvigorate tourism, which has been slowed down due to pandemic-related regulations. The extended transit period and relaxed travel restrictions aim to make China a more attractive stop for international travelers, encouraging them to extend their stay and enjoy the rich experiences the country has to offer.
