Rising Tide of Sexual Violence Against Children in Haiti, UN Reports
The UN warns of a shocking 1,000% surge in sexual violence against children amid escalating gang violence in Haiti.
Gang violence in Haiti has spiraled into an unprecedented crisis, with the United Nations' children's agency, UNICEF, reporting a staggering 1,000% increase in sexual violence against children since 2023. Spokesperson James Elder warned that children's bodies are now being treated as "battlegrounds" in the ongoing conflict, highlighting the dismal conditions faced by over one million children living in terror.
The capital city Port-au-Prince remains largely under gang control, with an estimated 85% of the area dominated by these violent groups. The harrowing accounts depict a reality in which children, like a 16-year-old girl who was abducted while shopping, endure horrific experiences such as beatings, drugging, and repeated rapes. This young girl was eventually released after a month of captivity when her family was deemed unable to pay a ransom. She now resides in a UN shelter, receiving care alongside numerous other victims.
In addition to sexual exploitation, gangs are also forcibly recruiting children, with UNICEF reporting instances of members as young as eight. The breakdown of law and order has led to the collapse of fundamental services, leaving schools and hospitals barely operational. Many children are out of school, missing out on a crucial part of their childhood.
UNICEF is striving to protect these vulnerable children by establishing mobile safe spaces aimed at preventing sexual violence. However, the organization has faced obstacles, receiving only a fraction of the $221.4 million requested in humanitarian aid last year. The potential impact of U.S. foreign aid freezes could further jeopardize the already diminished prospects for Haitian children in desperate need of support and protection. With the dire conditions worsening, attention remains on Haiti's political turmoil and the urgent need for comprehensive humanitarian interventions.
