Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, following a 'domestic-related' investigation, authorities have confirmed.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris stated that the gunman was fatally shot by police during the altercation.
The incident occurred shortly after 14:00 local time (18:00 GMT). Eyewitness reports indicated an officer was airlifted via medical helicopter from the scene.
The shooting forced a nearby school district in Spring Grove—a small community of approximately 2,500 people—to temporarily shelter in place. Officials later clarified that the school was not affected by the incident.
Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public following the incident.
The shooting took place in a rural part of York County in North Codorus Township, about 100 miles (160 km) east of Philadelphia.
Officers were present at the scene due to an investigation initiated the day before. However, many details of the investigation remain undisclosed as it continues.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro visited the area and met the families of the deceased officers. He expressed his condolences, stating, 'We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country.' He additionally remarked that such violence is unacceptable, emphasizing the need for societal improvement.
In a gesture of respect, Shapiro ordered all flags in the state to be flown at half-mast in honor of the fallen officers.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that agents are on-site to aid local and state partners in the investigation and extended prayers to the families of the officers and the York County community.
