Zulu King's Third Marriage Faces Legal Battle as First Wife Loses Court Case

First wife of South Africa's Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini fails to block his upcoming wedding.

Controversies surround the royal family as the king's marriage plans lead to legal disputes and public speculation.

Despite legal challenges from his first wife, Queen Ntokozo kaMayisela, South African Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini is poised to move ahead with plans for a third marriage. The queen sought court intervention prior to what was anticipated to be the king's wedding later this week, but her request to halt the ceremony has been denied.

The ruling's timing raises questions about the wedding’s viability. Reports from South African media indicated that the king issued a statement claiming the wedding had been postponed due to “reasons beyond the control of the royal house.” The situation has taken on a life of its own, with conflicting reports about whether the ceremony will proceed as planned.

Under South African law, polygamous marriages are permissible but must be registered as customary unions. Queen Ntokozo's legal motion argued that her civil marriage to the king remains in effect, thereby preventing him from marrying again with her consent. Judge Bongani Mngadi dismissed her application, referencing previous agreements indicating the queen was aware of the king’s intent to marry more than once.

Adding to the royal family's challenges, a divorce application filed by the king indicated that the relationship had deteriorated. Amid the legal framework, complications have arisen with reports suggesting that the bride-to-be remains unaware of any cancellations, insisting that preparations for the event continue.

The king's reign has been mired in various controversies since he ascended to the throne in late 2022 following his late father, King Goodwill Zwelithini’s extensive rule. Recent moves include the suspension of the Ingonyama Trust board, which oversees land management in KwaZulu-Natal, and the rapid dismissal of key advisers, both actions that have raised eyebrows among observers of the monarchy. Tensions regarding his legitimacy as king are also escalating, with ongoing legal challenges addressing his recognition by the state.

King Misuzulu's turbulent path raises questions about the stability of the Zulu leadership amid growing public scrutiny and internal discord, marking a period of uncertainty for the historical monarch and the people he represents.
