Indian Muslims Alarmed by Intensified Crackdown Following Kashmir Tragedy

Authorities are detaining Muslims and demolishing properties amid fears of escalating anti-Muslim sentiment.

Increasing hostility toward India's Muslim community is raising alarm as right-wing narratives gain momentum after a recent attack in Kashmir.

India's Muslim community is on edge following a series of government actions that perceive as a crackdown on their rights, particularly after a devastating attack in Kashmir that left 26 individuals dead, predominantly Hindu tourists. The incident has led to increased scrutiny of Muslims, with activists warning that right-wing Hindu nationalists are leveraging the attack to reinforce a campaign of oppression against Muslims.

The attack occurred near Pahalgam in the Indian-administered region of Kashmir, prompting accusations from India against Pakistan for allegedly supporting the militants. In the wake of the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to eradicate terrorist threats and has hinted at possible military actions against Pakistan, which has encountered these claims with denials of involvement.

In addition to military threats, the central government is seen to be pursuing punitive actions toward Pakistan, including potential disruptions to cross-border water supplies. However, it is the intensified focus on the Muslim population within India that has attracted significant concern.

In areas governed by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, local authorities have ramped up actions against what they claim are “illegal Bangladeshi” immigrants, extending the discourse into derogatory labels used against the Muslim minority, such as “Pakistani.” This narrative has led to mass detentions, with security forces arresting hundreds purportedly in search of those responsible for the apathetic attack. Reports of home demolitions are also surfacing, signaling a push against Muslims in several states, stirring fears of widespread discrimination against India's largest minority group.
