Mathias Pogba Sentenced to Three Years in Extortion Case Involving Brother Paul Pogba
Mathias Pogba, brother of football star Paul Pogba, receives a suspended sentence after extortion conviction.
Mathias Pogba, the elder brother of former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, has been handed a three-year sentence, with two years suspended, for attempting to extort money from his brother. In a Paris court ruling, Mathias was fined €20,000 (£16,500) and will spend one year under house arrest with an electronic bracelet instead of serving time in prison.
Additionally, five accomplices involved in the extortion scheme received prison sentences ranging from four to eight years. The case arose when Paul Pogba reported being held at gunpoint by individuals he described as childhood friends, who demanded €13 million (£10.8 million). Despite their threats, Paul managed to pay €100,000 (£82,600) to the attackers.
Mathias Pogba's defense lawyer, Mbeko Tabula, criticized the decision, labeling it as "extremely harsh" and indicated the possibility of an appeal. The sentences for his co-defendants were as follows: Roushdane K received eight years; Boubacar C was sentenced to four years, with two suspended; Adama C and Mamadou M each received five years, with varying suspensions; and Machikour K got four years with three suspended.
In light of the extortion attempt, Paul Pogba expressed last year that he contemplated leaving football due to the emotional and financial turmoil. He emphasized the importance of caution when it comes to money, stating that it can alter relationships and create significant rifts within families.
