Kremlin Keeps Details Under Wrap for Upcoming Putin-Trump Call
The highly anticipated conversation may shape future U.S.-Russia relations amid ongoing Ukraine tensions.
The Kremlin announced on Monday that preparations for a second phone call between President Vladimir V. Putin and President Donald Trump are underway, but declined to reveal the details of the agenda. This upcoming conversation is particularly significant as it marks the first engagement between the two since Putin articulated numerous conditions regarding a cease-fire with Ukraine.
During remarks made while aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump indicated expectations of discussing key territorial concerns, especially those related to Ukrainian energy infrastructure. “We want to see if we can bring that war to an end,” Trump stated, exhibiting a hopeful outlook on the potential for a resolution, though acknowledging the uncertainty that remains.
The Kremlin confirmed that the call is scheduled for Tuesday, yet they remained tight-lipped about its agenda. When pressed on whether nuclear power plants in Ukraine might come up in conversation, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri S. Peskov stated, “the contents of conversations between the two leaders cannot be discussed a priori,” emphasizing the necessity of privacy before the discussions commence.
This renewed dialogue comes as Russia and the United States have engaged in intricate negotiations concerning a peace agreement after more than three years of conflict initiated by Putin. Ukraine has expressed its willingness to support a U.S.-backed cease-fire lasting a month, provided Russia reciprocates.
Trump has been vocal about his desire to pursue a rapid truce, contrasting with Putin's apparent strategy of leveraging the situation to secure additional concessions. Reflecting on the 30-day cease-fire proposal, Putin noted its appropriateness, asserting that discussions with American counterparts are essential to address lingering questions related to the arrangement.
Prior to the call, Putin met with Steve Witkoff, a special envoy of Trump involved in the Ukrainian peace negotiations, which was described as a productive meeting aimed at narrowing differences between Moscow and Washington.
Recent developments in the Kursk region, with Russian advances against Ukrainian forces, have altered the dynamics, potentially benefiting Putin’s bargaining position in future discussions regarding a halt to hostilities.
