In a dramatic conclusion to a nearly two-month federal trial, Sean "Diddy" Combs was acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking charges while being found guilty of transportation for the purpose of prostitution. After 13 hours of deliberation, a jury of 12 jurors delivered their verdict in New York City, clearing Combs of three out of five serious charges he faced.
The prosecution argued that Combs exploited his celebrity status to orchestrate a criminal enterprise for sex trafficking, concealing his actions through associates and employees. However, the jury was unable to reach a consensus on the more complex racketeering charge, which involved allegations of an illegal enterprise under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (Rico).
While the rapper did acknowledge some instances of domestic violence, he denied allegations of non-consensual sexual activities and a larger criminal scheme. The courtroom atmosphere shifted dramatically when jurors announced their decision to acquit him on the most severe charges, eliciting strong emotional reactions.
Prior to his departure, Combs was observed kneeling and seemingly praying, visibly shaken by the court's decision. The judge is expected to determine whether to release him on bail at 1:00 PM EST today.
During the trial, jurors were informed of Combs’ tumultuous past, including testimony from his ex-girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, who recounted experiences of being coerced into sex acts. It was revealed that a pivotal piece of evidence included footage showing Combs’ aggressive actions against Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel hallway in 2016.
Combs' defense contended that the accusations were oversimplified, asserting that certain behaviors stemmed from personal issues rather than a coordinated effort of trafficking and racketeering.
Both racketeering and sex trafficking carry potential life sentences, and the artist continues to face numerous civil lawsuits alleging various forms of sexual misconduct.
