Strengthening India-US Ties: Vance's Call for Collaboration
US Vice-President JD Vance emphasizes the importance of closer cooperation between India and the US during his visit.
In a passionate appeal for closer India-US relations, US Vice-President JD Vance asserted the need for both nations to join forces in order to promote a "prosperous and peaceful" 21st Century. Speaking at an event in Jaipur during his four-day visit to India, Vance warned that failure to achieve this collaboration could lead to adverse consequences for humanity.
Vance's remarks followed a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, wherein both leaders noted advancements in discussions regarding a bilateral trade agreement aimed at mitigating impending tariffs. This agreement comes at a critical time, as India seeks to finalize trade negotiations amidst President Donald Trump's impending tariffs, scheduled to take effect on July 9. India had been bracing for substantial tariffs of up to 27%, prompting intensified diplomatic efforts to forge a more favorable trade relationship.
In his address, Vance emphasized that both countries had successfully outlined the framework for the ongoing negotiations. "This is a vital step toward realizing the shared vision of President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, serving as a roadmap to our final deal," Vance remarked, earning appreciation from the audience for his recognition of Modi's adept negotiating style.
The personal rapport shared between Modi and Trump has been evident, with Modi being one of the first global leaders to visit Trump after the start of his second term. However, President Trump has consistently criticized India's trade policies, labeling the nation a "tariff king" and identifying a lack of mutual trade reciprocity. While India has made some concessions by lowering tariffs on various goods, tension remains, especially in protected sectors like agriculture.
Vance also indicated a keen interest in bolstering US exports of energy and defense equipment to India, highlighting the multifaceted discussions that transpired regarding defense, strategic technologies, and energy cooperation.
Post-meeting, Modi expressed eagerness in welcoming Trump to India for the forthcoming Quad summit, during which high-level discussions are anticipated.
The day of discussions culminated with a personal dinner hosted by Modi for Vance and his family. Vance, who is accompanied by his wife Usha and their children, has also expressed a desire to reconnect his family with their Indian heritage. Following their meeting, the Vance family explored the rich cultural landscape of Jaipur and plans to visit the Taj Mahal before concluding their visit back to the United States.
