Murder Conviction in Shocking Case of Kenyan Gay Rights Activist
Kenyan court convicts roommate in murder of LGBTQ activist, raising concerns over community safety.
The case drew widespread attention, highlighting the perils faced by LGBTQ individuals in the country. Edwin Chiloba’s body was discovered stuffed in a metal box beside a roadside in January 2023, leading to fears for the safety of other activists in the region.
On Wednesday, Judge Reuben Nyambati Nyakundi of the Eldoret High Court delivered the verdict, declaring that Odhiambo premeditated the brutal act against Chiloba. Shortly before the murder, the pair had been seen together returning to their shared apartment, after which witnesses reported hearing cries coming from inside.
DNA evidence established that Odhiambo had sexual relations with Chiloba prior to the crime. However, the trial did not uncover any clear motive behind the murder, with the judge remarking, "I could not find what could have been the motive of causing the death of your dear friend."
The conviction has reignited discussions about the systemic issues surrounding LGBTQ rights in Kenya, where individuals often face violence and discrimination. Activists and rights organizations have reiterated calls for better protections for marginalized communities in the wake of this tragic event, underscoring that more needs to be done to ensure safety for all citizens regardless of their sexual orientation.
