Shortly before the murder, the pair had been seen together returning to their shared apartment, after which witnesses reported hearing cries coming from inside.
DNA evidence established that Odhiambo had sexual relations with Chiloba prior to the crime. However, the trial did not uncover any clear motive behind the murder, with the judge remarking, "I could not find what could have been the motive of causing the death of your dear friend."
