On March 21, 2025, at approximately 1:04 a.m. ET, the London Fire Brigade reported that a significant fire broke out at the North Hyde substation, resulting in a power outage that affected over 16,000 homes in western London. As of early Friday, firefighters were still battling the fire, which had engulfed around half of a transformer at the site, and officials warned that disruptions were likely to escalate throughout the morning.
"This will be a prolonged incident, with crews remaining on scene throughout the night," said Pat Goulbourne, assistant commissioner at the London Fire Brigade, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Firefighters mobilized around 70 personnel to the scene, where thick smoke billowed from the substation.
In response to the fire, approximately 150 individuals were evacuated, and authorities established a 650-foot cordon around the area as a precautionary measure. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials are urging the public to avoid the vicinity as they work to contain the situation.
Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, the regional power utility, confirmed the substantial impact of the fire on local residents and urged affected households to remain patient as teams work on repairs.
