Senators Demand Investigation into Elon Musk's Alleged Links with Russian Officials
Calls for a federal inquiry into Musk's communications with high-ranking Russian officials have intensified among Senate Democrats.
Two prominent Senate Democrats are urging for a federal investigation into Elon Musk's alleged interactions with key Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin. Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed and New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen have called upon the Pentagon and Justice Department to examine Musk's reported communications and their implications for his role as a government contractor.
Recent reports from the Wall Street Journal indicated that Musk has engaged in "multiple, high-level conversations" with Putin since 2022, alongside contacts with other senior Russian figures. Both senators expressed alarm over Musk's reliability given the stated links to Russia's military ambitions, which they describe as a potential threat to U.S. national security.
In an apparent response to the growing scrutiny, Musk took to his social media platform, X, asserting his intent to discover the origin of the allegations and expressing disdain towards the senators, whom he labeled "puppets" and "knuckleheads." The senators have conveyed concerns in a formal letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Defense Department Inspector General Robert Storch, questioning Musk's security clearance and the nature of his relationships with foreign officials.
Musk has substantial contracts with the U.S. government in the defense and intelligence sectors, while maintaining a top-secret security clearance. However, Reed and Shaheen highlighted that Musk has not reported his contacts with foreign officials, a standard practice required of others with similar clearances. They pointed out that these communications coincide with a Justice Department investigation linking Russian officials to efforts of disseminating propaganda via social media platforms like X.
The senators urged for an immediate review and an evaluation of whether Musk's connections with Russian officials warrant a deep dive into his eligibility for government contracts. Meanwhile, Musk continues to be involved in diplomatic discussions, linking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, as well as making recent appearances complementary to diplomatic efforts in relation to Iran.
