On June 12, 2025, a shocking plane crash involving Air India Flight 171 unfolded shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, claiming the lives of all 241 passengers except Viswash Kumar Ramesh, aged 38. The survivor, who was on his way back to London, managed to communicate with his family in Leicester, England, just moments after escaping the wreckage. Confused and grateful, he reportedly told them, “I don’t know how I am alive,” according to his younger brother, Nayan Ramesh, who remains astonished by his brother's survival amidst unspeakable tragedy.
While the family gathered in Leicester, an atmosphere of grief hung heavy outside their home, where relatives provided comfort to one another as they mourned the loss of 241 fellow passengers, including Viswash's brother, Ajay. Nayan shared details of the harrowing call made by Viswash shortly after the crash. He described how his brother, despite sustaining multiple injuries, had managed to reach out. "Our plane crashed; I have no idea how I got outside," Viswash informed their father, conveying the shock and disorientation he felt in the aftermath of the calamity.
Dr. Dhaval Gameti, who treated Viswash in India, confirmed that he had sustained significant injuries but was stable and out of danger. Nayan conveyed that medical professionals had advised Viswash to rest, and his phone had been turned off to allow him to recover.
