Strong Earthquake Strikes Near Santorini, Prompting Mass Evacuations
Evacuations surge as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake jolts the Greek islands following days of tremors.
A powerful earthquake measuring 5.2 in magnitude struck between the Greek islands of Amorgos and Santorini, intensifying fears after several days of tremors in the area. The tremor hit at 21:09 local time (19:09 GMT) and was recorded at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers. In response, more than 11,000 individuals have evacuated from Santorini, with around 7,000 opting for ferry transport while an additional 4,000 left by air.
Despite the quake's magnitude, officials reported no significant structural damage on the island, although precautionary measures were quickly enacted. The majority of evacuees are local residents and seasonal workers, as the island is currently in its low tourist season, welcoming millions of visitors during the summer months.
To enhance safety, schools across Santorini and neighboring islands like Anafi, Paros, Naxos, and Mykonos are closed until further notice, with a review scheduled for Friday. Greek Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias confirmed the dispatch of specialized firefighting units to the island, equipped with search dogs and mobile operations centers, while helicopters remain on standby for emergencies.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis shared an optimistic outlook during a meeting with civil protection experts, emphasizing the state's reliance on science and preparedness. He assured that all necessary plans have been set in motion to handle the situation effectively, urging island residents to cooperate with authorities and maintain calm.
Though the region lies in the Hellenic Volcanic Arc—known for its geological activity—the recent seismic events have been determined by experts to be linked to tectonic plate movements rather than volcanic eruptions. While scientists acknowledge the unpredictability of earthquakes, certain areas, including the Greek Islands, are recognized for their susceptibility, allowing for better preparedness from government officials.
