Gérard Depardieu Faces Off Against Sexual Assault Allegations in High-Stakes Trial

French film legend Gérard Depardieu argues his innocence in court during a trial that highlights generational shifts in acceptable behavior.

The trial has become a battleground of conflicting narratives as the actor confronts accusations of assault from two women while grappling with his past behavior in today's societal context.

In a heated courtroom exchange, legendary French actor Gérard Depardieu defended himself against allegations of sexual assault during the third day of trials in Paris. The 76-year-old star, accused of inappropriately touching two women on a film set in 2021, admitted to a personal struggle with changing societal norms. Recognizing that his past behavior may be deemed "rude" or "vulgar," he declared his attempts to avoid conflict, stating, "I try to avoid being listened to by the new world – so that I don't come across as detestable."

Depardieu vehemently denies the charges, insisting that he never possessed any sexual intent and suggesting that any contact could have been accidental. He emphasized, "I don't see how it could be fun feeling up a woman... I am not a metro-train groper." The trial, which could lead to five years in prison and a substantial fine if he is convicted, has revealed a tense atmosphere, with both sides accusing each other of intentional deception.

During intense questioning, Depardieu addressed the nature of the allegations, asserting that the act of touching should not necessarily qualify as sexual assault. His lawyer vehemently defended him against accusations that were made in court as a tactic to misrepresent the actor's words, reflecting deeper animosities between the legal representatives.

The accusations stem from incidents during the filming of "Les Volets Verts" (The Green Shutters), where a set decorator and an assistant director accused him of inappropriate advances. The first plaintiff described a troubling encounter where Depardieu allegedly restrained her and used obscene language. The second recounted similar experiences, detailing multiple instances where she was touched inappropriately.

Despite contrasting accounts, the defense has brought forward photographs from the set intended to undermine the plaintiffs' claims, showing the parties appearing cordial. One plaintiff, initially unsure if she was victimized, asserted that media exposure to other allegations against Depardieu played a significant role in her decision to file a police report two years later.

As the proceedings continue, the trial not only puts the once-iconic actor under a public microscope but also serves as a reflection of the evolving cultural landscape regarding sexual misconduct. The French public has witnessed a shift in perception towards a figure once celebrated for his extensive contributions to cinema. The trial, expected to extend into Thursday, raises questions about accountability and the changing definitions of acceptable behavior in contemporary society.
