**Police Launch Hate Crime Probe into Migrant-Boat Effigy Burning in Northern Ireland**

**Incident condemned by leaders, ignites debate over community tensions and hate speech.**

**In Moygashel, a controversial bonfire burns, stirring memories of sectarian conflicts and raising concerns for migrant rights.**

In a shocking turn of events during the annual loyalist celebrations in Northern Ireland, an effigy depicting Black migrants on a boat was set ablaze, prompting a police investigation as a potential hate crime. The incident occurred on Thursday night in Moygashel, County Tyrone, where a tower of wooden pallets held a boat featuring life-size mannequins clad in life jackets, placed atop banners with messages like "stop the boats" and “veterans before refugees."

The burning of the effigy took place in the presence of a large crowd, part of the Twelfth of July events that commemorate the historical victory of Protestant King William III over Catholic King James II in 1690. For over a century, these marches and parades have seen participation from the Protestant community, but tensions have historically flared during this period—especially during the Troubles, a time marked by violence between Catholic and Protestant factions. Though marches have become less contentious in recent years, the continued practice of large bonfires has raised concerns among law enforcement.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported receiving numerous calls regarding the fire and the materials involved, categorizing the event as a "hate incident." Officials expressed their commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals in the community while navigating the limitations of existing legal frameworks. They affirmed their responsibility to monitor gatherings and respond to potential unrest as they continue to investigate the implications of such provocative displays.
