In a significant milestone for cricket, 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi from Bihar has earned a remarkable $130,500 contract with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The auction, held recently in Saudi Arabia, saw Suryavanshi becoming the youngest player to join the tournament, which is lauded as the richest cricket league in the world.
Suryavanshi, known for his left-handed batting, has proven his mettle by representing Bihar in national championships such as the Ranji and Mushtaq Ali trophies. His impressive credentials also include participation in Under-19 internationals for India. Despite stiff competition from Delhi Capitals, the Royals secured Suryavanshi after beginning their bids at 3 million rupees.
Notably, he made his Ranji debut at just 12 years of age against Mumbai and recently showcased extraordinary talent by scoring a breathtaking 58-ball century as an opener in an Under-19 unofficial Test against Australia. Additionally, he boasts an unbeaten score of 332 in an Under-19 tournament.
Rajasthan Royals expressed their confidence in the young cricketer, with CEO Jake Lush McCrum acknowledging his raw potential, "He's an incredible talent... and we're really excited to have him as part of the franchise." Despite the excitement, the IPL auction raised concerns over child labor, as Indian laws prohibit labor for children under 14, though no such rules exist for sports.
The news of Suryavanshi's contract has created a wave of joy within his family, who sacrificed their land to support his cricket aspirations. His father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, a farmer who migrated to Mumbai for better job prospects, remains humble and intends to keep his son grounded amid newfound fame. “I will talk to him and make sure that this IPL auction doesn’t go to his head. He still has a long way to go,” he stated. As Suryavanshi continues to make his mark, he prepares for future challenges, including a wait until he turns 15 to play in ICC-organized international matches.
