Kyiv Suffers Deadly Overnight Assault as Russian Strikes Intensify
At least nine lives lost and multiple injuries reported in Ukraine's capital following a missile and drone barrage.
Kyiv endured a harrowing night as a Russian missile and drone bombardment targeted the capital, leaving at least nine people dead and 60 injured, including children. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that debris from downed drones sparked multiple fires, heightening fears that there may be individuals trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed residential building.
In addition to the tragedy in Kyiv, the northeastern city of Kharkiv also experienced attacks, resulting in injuries to two residents. The assaults coincide with escalating international diplomacy, as US President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his stance against recognizing Russian control of Crimea, a territory seized by Moscow in 2014. Ukraine steadfastly refuses to relinquish Crimea, emphasizing its commitment to reclaiming all occupied land.
According to Ukraine’s state emergencies ministry, the devastation in Kyiv unfolded in the Svyatoshynskyi district, where emergency responders equipped with sniffer dogs were deployed to search for survivors amidst the destruction. Klitschko noted that six children and a pregnant woman were among those injured, while Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko revealed that phone calls from within the wreckage indicated that additional victims might be trapped.
Videos circulating on social media purportedly captured the missile strikes hitting the city, sparking significant fires throughout the area. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Air Force warned that the threat of air strikes extended across nearly all parts of the nation.
In Kharkiv, located approximately 40 kilometers from the Russian border, Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported damage to private homes and injuries caused by the onslaught. Notably, Russia’s defense ministry claimed the interception or destruction of 87 Ukrainian drones overnight in various regions, although they did not comment on the attacks in Ukraine.
