Soccer Enthusiasts Express Fear Over U.S. Immigration Policies Ahead of Club World Cup

Concerns over U.S. immigration enforcement are causing a decline in participation among soccer fans, highlighting the potential impact on attendance for major sporting events.

Amid heightened anxiety about immigration raids, soccer fans—especially those lacking legal status—are canceling gatherings, reflecting how U.S. policies are threatening the spirit of community and participation ahead of the World Cup.

As the world gears up for the Club World Cup next week, concerns over U.S. immigration policies are further complicating the landscape for international soccer fans. Many supporters, particularly those from countries affected by President Trump's travel bans, are hesitant to engage in group activities, fearing potential immigration enforcement actions.

Manny Mizael, who emigrated from Brazil to Boston 27 years ago, remains deeply devoted to Flamengo—a prominent Brazilian soccer club—leading supporter gatherings that typically host hundreds. However, recent atmosphere changes, driven by the Trump administration's crackdown on undocumented immigrants, have stoked fears within the community.

This trepidation led Mizael’s supporters club to cancel a planned watch party in February due to concerns about immigration raids targeting attendees. “People are being snatched off the streets and getting arrested,” Mizael explains, highlighting the grave impact this climate has not just on community events but on individuals' lives.

The specter of immigration enforcement looms over upcoming major events, including next year's World Cup, expected to draw around 6.5 million attendees to matches primarily hosted in the U.S., as well as Canada and Mexico. As fans plan their once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to the World Cup, with many forgoing significant expenses to realize this dream, the reality of cancelled festivities weighs heavily on both the spirit of the games and the communities that cherish them.

In this climate of uncertainty, it appears that the enthusiasm and bold celebrations typically associated with soccer culture may fundamentally alter, as the looming threat of immigration raids overshadows the love of the game.
