Ex-Chancellor Sebastian Kurz's Perjury Conviction Overturned
Austrian politician's successful appeal could signal a potential return to politics.
Austria's former chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, has successfully appealed against a conviction related to false testimony given to a parliamentary committee, resulting in the overturning of an eight-month suspended prison sentence. This ruling marks a turning point for the 38-year-old politician who resigned from his chancellorship in 2021 amid numerous allegations. The recent acquittal opens the door for what may be a political revival, despite ongoing investigations into separate corruption allegations.
Last year, Kurz faced legal consequences for allegedly committing perjury by providing misleading statements during a parliamentary inquiry. The crux of the case hinged on claims that he had not merely been informed but had actively participated in the selection of executives for a newly established state holding company while in office. Initially, a trial judged Kurz’s input to be false; however, in his appeal, Kurz contended that the presiding judge exhibited bias.
The appellate court, comprising three judges, pronounced on Monday that Kurz was acquitted as there was no fulfilled objective offense of providing false evidence. Addressing media outside the courtroom, Kurz expressed relief, asserting that the years of allegations against him have "now all collapsed." He emphasized the extensive legal confrontations he had endured and underscored his stance of innocence concerning ongoing corruption inquiries.
Currently, prosecutors are deliberating whether to press charges against Kurz over accusations that he misappropriated public funds for favorable media coverage and for polling that exaggerated his popularity. While he has not disclosed any intentions to venture back into politics, post-resignation in 2021, Kurz has been active in various business initiatives. Notably, he co-founded Dream, a high-profile cybersecurity company in 2023, alongside partners from Israel's NSO Group, known for the contentious Pegasus spyware.
Previously, Kurz galvanized the conservative Austrian People's Party, leading significant election victories in 2017 and 2019 through a stringent immigration agenda. The People's Party remains in power in Austria after forming a coalition with the Social Democrats and a liberal party post last August's elections. Despite the far-right Freedom Party obtaining the highest parliamentary vote share for the first time, they were unable to secure a governing majority amidst widespread voter dissatisfaction regarding economic conditions and migration issues.
