The construction of the Empire Wind 1 project, capable of powering 500,000 homes, has come to a sudden halt following an order from the Trump administration, raising alarms for the US wind industry previously supported by Biden.

US Halts Major Wind Farm Construction Off New York Coast
The Biden administration's push for renewable energy faces a significant setback as Trump reinstates construction freeze on the Empire Wind 1 project.
The U.S. wind energy sector faced a substantial blow as the Trump administration announced a halt to the construction of the Empire Wind 1 project off the coast of New York. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum criticized the Biden administration for allegedly expediting the project's approval process and bypassing adequate analysis.
The Empire Wind 1 project was hailed for its potential to supply enough electricity to power 500,000 households, thereby supporting the nation’s move towards cleaner energy. However, the new administration's actions reflect a clear shift in policy, standing in stark contrast to the Biden-era focus on renewable energy initiatives.
Upon returning to office, Trump immediately moved to freeze federal permits and loans for wind projects with the aim of prioritizing traditional energy sources. "We're not going to do the wind thing," Trump remarked previously, denouncing wind turbines as “big, ugly windmills” that pose threats to wildlife.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has condemned the federal decision as "federal overreach," vowing to oppose the halt “every step of the way.” Meanwhile, Equinor, the Norwegian company overseeing the project, announced a suspension in offshore construction, emphasizing the suddenness of the federal directive despite having secured prior permits.
Equinor had acquired a lease to the area in 2017, planning to deliver 810 megawatts of energy directly into Brooklyn. Trump's recent claims that wind turbines endanger whale populations have further fueled controversies surrounding the industry, harkening back to his failed attempts to block wind farm developments in Scotland.
This policy realignment marks a critical moment for the renewable energy discourse in the United States, as industry experts warn of setbacks to long-term climate commitments and advocacy for a sustainable future.
