Pope Leo XIV Advocates for Press Freedom and Journalist Release

In his inaugural speech addressing the media, Pope Leo XIV made a poignant appeal for the release of journalists currently imprisoned, highlighting their commitment to uncovering and sharing the truth. The Committee to Protect Journalists noted that as of 2024, there are still 361 journalists detained worldwide.

During his address at the Vatican’s Paul VI audience hall, the newly elected Pope, who took office just days ago, encouraged journalists to spotlight issues of injustice and poverty. He urged them to report the truth rather than engage in divisive rhetoric, advocating for a media landscape devoid of "fanaticism and hatred." The Pope emphasized the necessity of a more compassionate form of communication, stating, "We must say 'no' to the war of words and images" and calling for an end to aggressive exchanges.

Additionally, he expressed concerns over the rise of artificial intelligence, stressing that journalists should wield such technologies with "responsibility and discernment" to ensure they serve the greater good of mankind.
