In a historical turn, Jorge Mario Bergoglio emerged as Pope Francis, a beacon of humility and reform at the forefront of a struggling Catholic Church.

 

In March 2013, the Roman Catholic Church made an unprecedented choice with the election of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who assumed the papacy as Francis, marking many milestones. Not only did he become the first South American pope, but he was also the first non-European pontiff in over 1,200 years and the first Jesuit leader of the Church. His election was a clear indication from the cardinals that the future of the Catholic faith would increasingly rest in the Global South, which is home to the majority of the world's Catholics.
