A senior figure within Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has been apprehended on allegations of acting as a Russian spy. While the SBU has withheld the suspect's name, reports from local media indicate that he is Col. Dmytro Kozyura, who served as the chief of staff for the agency's anti-terrorism division.
Visual evidence from local news outlets captured Kozyura in handcuffs during his arrest, which was overseen by SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk. The SBU's statement outlined that Kozyura is believed to have had at least 14 separate instances of collecting and relaying sensitive information to Russian authorities.
The investigation that led to his arrest was thorough, employing audio and video surveillance techniques alongside access to his electronic devices. Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has been actively carrying out operations to identify and apprehend Russian agents within its borders.
Malyuk was heavily involved in this specific investigation and was responsible for overseeing the arrest operation. According to the SBU, he kept President Volodymyr Zelensky updated on its developments. The agency reported that Kozyura was allegedly recruited by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) back in 2018 during his time in Vienna and had been largely inactive until his handlers resumed contact with him last December.
"Thanks to encrypted program bookmarks, we gained access to the traitor's devices—mobile phones and computers," Malyuk explained in a video released on the SBU's website. "Our operations involved extensive audio and video monitoring. Throughout this process, we managed to effectively document the suspect's activities of collecting and sending critical information to the enemy."
Malyuk emphasized the ongoing efforts for "self-cleansing" within the SBU, affirming that despite enemy infiltration attempts, the agency remains vigilant and adept at uncovering and detaining any threats to national security.
