Vietnamese Beauty Queen Arrested in Fibre Gummies Fraud Scandal
Influencer Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien detained for promoting misleading health supplement.
Authorities in Vietnam detained Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, who gained fame by winning the 2021 Miss Grand International pageant, for allegedly deceiving consumers with false claims regarding a fibre-rich gummy product. Tien, alongside fellow social media influencers Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc, marketed Kera Supergreens Gummies, asserting that each gummy contained the equivalent fibre content of a full plate of vegetables.
The situation escalated when an alert consumer submitted the product for independent testing, revealing that each gummy contained only 16mg of fibre, dramatically lower than the 200mg advertised. Following these findings, governmental investigations uncovered that the gummies were produced with subpar ingredients and lacked proper disclosures about their content, including a high level of sorbitol typically found in laxatives.
In March, the trio of influencers received fines and issued public apologies, prompting further actions from authorities. Last month, both Pham Quang Linh and Hang Du Muc were arrested in conjunction with company officials and the product's manufacturer for creating counterfeit products and defrauding customers.
On Monday, it was announced that Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien has also been implicated and arrested for her role in the scandal. Reports indicate that over 100,000 boxes of the gummies were sold before the scandal led to a complete cessation of sales. Before her fall from grace, Tien was a celebrated celebrity in Vietnam, recognized with awards from the prime minister and the Communist Party.
