A detailed report by the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch attributes the yacht Bayesian's tragic sinking to high winds exceeding 80 mph. The vessel, which sank last August, was carrying notable figures including tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and his daughter. Efforts to recover the wreck have resumed following a paused operation due to a divers' death.

Tragic Capsizing of Tech Tycoon Mike Lynch's Yacht Linked to Extreme Weather Conditions
An interim investigation reveals that "extreme wind" led to the capsizing of the luxurious yacht Bayesian, claiming the lives of Mike Lynch and six others off the Sicilian coast.
The luxury superyacht, known as Bayesian, sank near Portofino, Sicily on August 19, 2022, resulting in the deaths of tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, 59, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and five others. According to an interim report by the UK's Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), "extreme wind" conditions were a major factor in the disaster. Winds reaching over 80 mph "violently" struck the yacht, causing it to capsize and flood within moments.
The tragic event unfolded early in the morning, around 04:06 local time, when the vessel was knocked to a 90-degree angle within just 15 seconds, causing chaos on board as people and items were thrown across the deck. Notably, the report indicated that flooding did not begin until the yacht tilted significantly, with no initial signs of distress being detected by the crew.
Chief Inspector Andrew Moll highlighted that once the yacht tilted beyond 70 degrees, recovery became impossible. The MAIB also pointed out that the Bayesian was particularly vulnerable to strong winds, with evidence suggesting that even gusts of 73 mph could cause it to tip over. Alarmingly, this critical information regarding stability was missing from the onboard stability manual, leaving the crew unaware of the yacht’s limits.
The vessel was reportedly in the area seeking shelter from approaching thunderstorms, with conditions appearing calm until shortly before the incident. Wind speeds escalated from 8 knots to a devastating 70 knots within less than an hour, creating a dangerously unexpected scenario. As the storm intensified, crew members attempted to secure the yacht, but were met with overwhelming conditions. Survivors were forced to escape using a life raft after the chaos, highlighting the rapid escalation of the situation.
The investigation is complicated by ongoing legal matters, including a criminal inquiry by Italian authorities that has limited access to the wreck. Recovery efforts for the 56-meter yacht were recently resumed after being paused in the wake of a diver’s tragic death during the recovery operation.
Mike Lynch, recognized as a prominent figure in the UK technology sector often compared to Microsoft’s Bill Gates, had been embroiled in legal issues leading up to his death. Inquests into the incident are considering the fatalities incurred, alongside the losses of other esteemed individuals on board that day. Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with several other passengers, managed to escape, shedding light on the harrowing experience faced by those aboard the ill-fated yacht.
