Abu Obeida, the spokesman for Hamas's armed wing, has been killed in an air strike in Gaza City, Israel has stated.
Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz congratulated the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Israel's security agency, Shin Bet, for the flawless execution in a post on X.
Katz revealed no details regarding the time or location of the operation, but the IDF earlier reported that its aircraft attacked a key terrorist in the al-Rimal neighbourhood on Saturday, leading to speculation that Obeida was the target.
Although Hamas has not confirmed his death, they claimed that numerous civilians were killed and wounded during Israeli strikes on a residential building in the area.
Katz also warned of intensifying campaigns against Obeida's associates following the airstrike.
The IDF provided additional context, stating that intelligence gathered by Shin Bet and the IDF's Intelligence Directorate allowed them to identify Obeida's location. They described the attack as targeting a Hamas-linked flat that had been used as a dental practice.
Observations from the scene revealed large amounts of money scattered due to the strike, with reports of funds being looted and later reclaimed by Hamas members.
Obeida was one of the few senior Hamas military leaders remaining alive since the violent escalation on October 7, 2023, which resulted in numerous fatalities and hostages.
In recent speeches, Obeida had warned of consequences for remaining Israeli hostages if Israel continued its military operations in Gaza.
Following the airstrike, local journalists reported at least seven fatalities and many injuries, including children. The IDF stated they had taken measures to minimize civilian harm.
The conflict in Gaza has seen escalating military action, including plans by Israel to seize control of Gaza City, prompting significant concerns over civilian safety and humanitarian conditions.
As the situation evolves, the international community is closely monitoring developments amid fears of increasing violence and humanitarian crises.
