Tragic Passing of Renowned Chinese Novelist Chiung Yao
Legendary romance author and screenwriter Chiung Yao dies at 86, leaving a lasting legacy in literature and television.
Chiung Yao, celebrated as one of the most successful Chinese language romance writers, has died at the age of 86 in an apparent suicide in her home located in New Taipei City. Emergency services have indicated that the cause of death was self-inflicted.
Beginning her writing journey at just 18, she authored over 60 novels, with many gaining traction through adaptations into film and television, cementing their popularity across generations. Among her notable creations is the iconic television drama "My Fair Princess," a production that significantly boosted the careers of prominent stars, including Zhao Wei and Fan Bingbing.
Born Chen Che in Sichuan, China in 1938, Chiung Yao became known by her pen name. A poignant message on her Facebook account stated: "Goodbye, my loved ones. I feel lucky that I have met and known you in this life", leaving her followers concerned about the timing of the post concerning her untimely death.
Famed for her poignant storytelling, Chiung Yao often encouraged younger generations not to lose hope in life, advising that they should only consider the end after reaching 86 or 87 years of age. In recent years, she had been out of the public eye, except for a tumultuous dispute with her stepchildren regarding her ailing husband in 2017.
Her childhood experiences, including her family's migration during the Sino-Japanese War and their eventual relocation to Taiwan post-1949, deeply influenced her writings. Chiung Yao’s debut novel "Outside The Window," drew inspiration from her own love story and gained immense popularity, setting her on a path of literary success.
The transformation of her novel "My Fair Princess" into a celebrated television series marked a significant milestone, leading to its status as one of the most beloved Chinese-language dramas. The iconic show's influence paved the way for its lead actors like Ruby Lin and Zhao Wei to become household names. Although Lin has continued her career in the industry, Zhao Wei has remained under the radar, particularly following her connection with Alibaba founder Jack Ma amid controversies.
