In a significant escalation of violence, a Russian attack on Kyiv overnight has resulted in at least four fatalities and numerous injuries, according to Ukraine's Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. He reported on social media that the missile and drone assault targeted residential areas, health facilities, and sports infrastructure.
The worst-affected area was the Shevchenkivskyi district, where an entire section of a high-rise residential building was devastated, trapping several individuals beneath the rubble. The regional head, Mykola Kalashnyk, confirmed that one woman was killed and two others injured in the Kyiv region as a result of the aerial strikes.
Ukraine’s emergencies service, DSNS, indicated that 13 people, including two children and a pregnant woman, suffered injuries from the attacks. Footage released by the service captured the chaos, showing distraught residents evacuating from the still-burning wreckage of the residential building.
Local authorities have reported multiple fires raging across the capital, with damage inflicted on key infrastructure, including an entrance to a metro station, which was used by many locals seeking shelter during the assaults.
The Russian military has not issued any statements regarding the recent strikes. The latest wave of violence forms part of an ongoing pattern since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine commenced in February 2022, with frequent aerial onslaughts targeting various cities.
The death toll from these attacks continues to rise, highlighting the dangers faced by civilians in Ukraine amid the protracted conflict.
