Protests Erupt in Vermont Over JD Vance's Controversial White House Exchange
Demonstrators rally against Vice-President JD Vance following his heated comments on Ukraine.
Protests flared in Vermont as demonstrators gathered along a road where Vice-President JD Vance was expected to travel with his family for a skiing trip, following a tense exchange between Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. The protests were characterized by strong pro-Ukraine sentiments, showcasing a shift in public opinion in light of Vance's accusations that Zelensky was disrespectful to the US administration.
The tensions escalated after former President Trump, who was also present at the White House meeting, suggested that Zelensky must negotiate with Russia to avoid drastic repercussions for the US and Europe. This clash in the Oval Office became a rallying point for protests, prompting hundreds to take to the streets not only in Vermont but also in major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Boston to show solidarity with Ukraine.
Judy Daly, affiliated with Indivisible Mad River Valley, noted that the protests had attracted even more participants following the White House incident. She emphasized that Vance had crossed a line, intensifying public discontent. Vance did not respond publicly to the protests, as his family adjusted their skiing plans to an undisclosed location amid the demonstrations.
As protests unfolded, Vermont Governor Phil Scott called for civility, encouraging residents to respect the vice-president's family. Meanwhile, amidst these protests, Zelensky travelled to the UK to participate in a summit aimed at devising a strategy for peace in Ukraine. This summit seeks to establish collaboration between the UK, France, and the United States, reflecting a broader international effort to address the ongoing conflict with Russia.
