Tragic Fire Claims Ten Lives at Spanish Care Home
A devastating blaze in a care facility near Zaragoza leaves multiple casualties, as investigations begin.
According to local officials, the fire began shortly before 5:00 AM local time. The care home, which has operated for 16 years and specializes in caring for residents with dementia and mental health issues, was housing 82 residents at the time of the incident. While firefighters managed to contain the fire, initial reports indicate that smoke inhalation was the primary cause of the fatalities.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire could have originated from a burning mattress in one of the rooms. Villafranca de Ebro's mayor, Volga Ramírez, recounted the terrifying scene, emphasizing the intense smoke that hindered rescue efforts. "You couldn't even breathe because of the smoke," she described to reporters, revealing that her husband bravely attempted to save individuals trapped inside.
Emergency personnel quickly transported residents to alternative accommodations following the catastrophe. Among the injured, two individuals were hospitalized, with one reported in critical condition.
The Spanish government’s delegate in the Aragón region, Fernando Beltrán, has extended condolences to the victims' families and confirmed that authorities would closely monitor the health of those receiving treatment and the ongoing investigation into the fire's cause.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has also expressed his sorrow over the disaster, recalling a similar tragedy from nine years ago in a nearby retirement facility that claimed nine lives. As the community grapples with this heartbreaking event, support efforts for affected families are likely to be initiated.
