The legendary boxer aims to reclaim his title in a high-profile match against WBC champion Mario Barrios.
Manny Pacquiao, the boxing icon, has made a stunning announcement: he is returning to the ring at the age of 46. This news comes almost four years after his last appearance in the ring. The Filipino superstar has revealed he will face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios on July 19 in Las Vegas as part of his quest to become boxing's oldest welterweight champion.
Taking to social media, Pacquiao expressed his excitement with a declaration, "I'm back. Let's make history." The statement follows the WBC's recent decision to rank him at number five, reigniting speculation surrounding his future in boxing. WBC president Mauricio Suliman has defended the decision, stating, "Pacquiao has been licensed by Nevada and passed all medicals and as a legendary WBC champion has been approved to fight by our organisation."
Pacquiao previously set the record for the oldest welterweight champion when he defeated Keith Thurman in 2019 for the WBA (Super) world title at 40 years old. His last fight was in August 2021, where he lost by decision to Yordenis Ugas. The esteemed boxer boasts an impressive career record of 62 fights, including eight losses and two draws, and has clinched four welterweight championships.
Since stepping back from boxing, Pacquiao has also pursued a political career in the Philippines; however, he was unsuccessful in his recent attempt to secure a seat in the Senate.
