Tiny Press, Big Impact: Tilted Axis Expands Its Reach in North America
British publisher Tilted Axis makes waves by prioritizing innovative translated literature and bringing groundbreaking titles to the U.S. market.
A few years ago, Jeremy Tiang stumbled upon a remarkable book in a Singapore bookstore—the collection of stories titled “Delicious Hunger,” penned under a pseudonym by author Hai Fan, who draws from his harrowing experiences as a guerrilla soldier. Aware of the challenges in securing a publisher for such unconventional stories, Tiang turned to Tilted Axis, a niche British press celebrated for its commitment to subversive and experimental translated works.
To Tiang’s delight, Tilted Axis quickly accepted the manuscript, and the English translation was released in the UK, winning an English PEN Translates Award—an unprecedented achievement for a Singaporean book. However, the journey to publish it in the United States proved to be less fruitful, as the title was turned down by 29 American publishers.
Fortunately, the announcement that Tilted Axis would expand its operations to North America sparked hope. The press plans to release "Delicious Hunger" this June, alongside several other innovative titles from its catalog set to debut in the U.S. this year. This expansion demonstrates Tilted Axis's dedication to bringing bold, underrepresented voices to a wider audience, embodying a unique risk-taking spirit that larger publishers often shy away from.
