Italian football club Lazio has made headlines for parting ways with Juan Bernabe, the falconer responsible for the club’s eagle mascot, Olimpia. The decision comes on the heels of Bernabe sharing explicit videos online showcasing his prosthetic penis, which he posted after undergoing surgery.
Handling the eagle since the 2010-11 season, Bernabe’s role included flying the bird over the Stadio Olimpico before matches. However, Lazio expressed shock regarding his online activity, leading to his immediate dismissal. The club stated that while they understood fans might feel the impact of losing the eagle at upcoming matches, it was necessary to disassociate their historical symbol from an individual involved in such controversies.
In defense of his decision, the 56-year-old falconer spoke to Radio24, claiming that his aim was to promote awareness around his medical procedure and asserting that "nudity is normal." He emphasized his upbringing in a liberal, naturist family as a context for his actions.
This isn’t the first instance of scrutiny for Bernabe, who was previously suspended in 2021 for performing a fascist salute during a match against Inter Milan. Following that incident, he admitted to admiration for Benito Mussolini, suggesting a lack of remorse for his controversial actions.
Lazio's decision reflects their commitment to uphold the values associated with their club and protect the integrity of their emblematic eagle amidst troubling incidents linked to its handler.
