In a tragic turn of events on December 30, 2024, a federal immigration agent, Luis Alberto Olivas García, was attacked fatally in the northern state of Chihuahua. This incident unfolded at the Precos-Samalayuca checkpoint, located approximately 30 miles from Ciudad Juárez, which borders El Paso, Texas. According to the National Migration Institute, the attack occurred after the agent requested to see the identification of a group of migrants.
Confusion surrounded the number of arrests, with national authorities stating that three individuals — two Venezuelan men and a Colombian man — were taken into custody. However, Jorge Armendáriz, a spokesman from the Chihuahua security ministry, insisted that only two Venezuelan men had been arrested. As of Monday evening, no formal charges had been made.
Experts have stated that such killings of immigration agents in Mexico are uncommon. Preliminary reports indicate that Olivas García suffered multiple puncture wounds, possibly inflicted by a sharp weapon, along with a head injury that may have resulted from being struck by a rock.
