Trump Shuts Down Federal Department of Education, Returns Control to States

In a bold move fulfilling a key component of his campaign platform, President Trump has signed an executive order to dissolve the federal Department of Education, transferring authority back to the states and local communities. This decision, met with a mix of applause and opposition, seeks to address long-standing frustrations surrounding federal involvement in education.

Established in the late 1970s following a political agreement between then-President Jimmy Carter and teachers unions, the Department has since been accused of inefficiency, reportedly spending upwards of $3 trillion with minimal improvements to national education outcomes. According to recent findings by Gallup, public education ranks as one of the least urgent issues for Americans, trailing behind concerns such as crime and immigration. Shockingly, nearly 75% of the population expresses dissatisfaction with current educational systems, believing that solutions will not emanate from Washington bureaucrats.

In her tenure as Education Secretary, Linda McMahon sought to streamline operations within the department, eliminating unnecessary roles and revealing that a significant number of the 4,300 employees were not directly contributing to essential educational functions.
