Trump Urges Immediate Ceasefire Between Thailand and Cambodia Amid Border Clashes
Former President Trump emphasizes need for peace as tensions escalate in Southeast Asia, calling for negotiations.
Trump made a statement on Truth Social during a private visit to his golf courses in Scotland, revealing that he had engaged in discussions with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. "Both nations have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!" he wrote. He further expressed the necessity for the violence to cease prior to any discussions on trade agreements.
The recent clashes, which began on July 24, have resulted in the deaths of at least 33 individuals, including soldiers and civilians, displacing thousands of people along the Cambodian-Thai border. Trump’s involvement comes just days before the implementation of new tariffs that would impose a 36% tax on goods imported from Cambodia and Thailand to the US on August 1, unless a resolution is reached.
In response to the escalating violence, Cambodian officials had already issued a plea for a ceasefire on the same day. Thailand’s Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, emphasized the need for Cambodia to show sincere intent in ending the conflict to facilitate negotiations. As Trump enjoyed a day of golf at his luxury resort, he reiterated his anticipation for concluding trading agreements once stability is restored in the region.
