In a historic win, Monty, a giant schnauzer, takes home the highly coveted Best in Show title at the renowned Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
Monty the giant schnauzer has made history by winning Best in Show at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. After three consecutive years of making it to the finals, Monty has finally claimed the top prize, marking a significant achievement as the first giant schnauzer to do so.
Owner Katie Bernardin celebrated Monty's victory, stating, "The puppy did the damn thing." The Westminster Kennel Club, known as the oldest dog show in the US and now celebrating its 149th year, features over 2,500 dogs competing across 200 breeds.
The format of the show includes selecting group winners who then move on to compete for the Best in Show title. Monty previously dominated the Working Group category but this year, his all-black coat and impressive performance secured him the overall honor. Judge Paula Nykiel praised Monty's exceptional qualities which distinguished him in the preliminary events.
Among the notable competitors was nine-year-old Bourbon, a retired whippet who secured the Reserve Best title for the third time. Other finalists included Comet the shih tzu, Mercedes the German shepherd, and Neal the bichon frise. In the previous year, a female miniature poodle claimed the Best in Show title. The Westminster Dog Show continues to be a significant event in the realm of canine competitions, capturing the hearts of dog lovers across the nation.
