In Karachi, Pakistan, Afghan families gathered to mark Eid al-Fitr this Sunday, overshadowed by the looming deadline for their mandatory deportation on Monday. Many have lived in Pakistan for decades, and now they face the prospect of returning to Taliban-led Afghanistan, a place some barely recognize.
Since the Soviet invasion in 1979, millions of Afghans have sought refuge in Pakistan, fleeing various waves of violence and political instability. While some have returned home over the years, persistent conflict and upheaval have forced many to seek shelter once again. The most recent displacement was exacerbated by the Taliban's swift takeover in August 2021, which left many refugees desperately seeking resettlement in countries like the United States.
