Knife Attack in Haifa Claims One Life, Several Others Injured
A stabbing incident at a train station in Haifa left one elderly man dead and four others injured, with police confirming the attacker was shot at the scene.
An elderly man has been killed in a violent stabbing attack that occurred at the HaMifratz Central train and bus station in Haifa, northern Israel. The incident, described by police as a terrorist attack, also left four individuals injured, including a 15-year-old boy and two adults in their thirties who are reported to be in serious condition, alongside a 70-year-old woman who sustained moderate injuries.
According to the Magen David Adom ambulance service, the victim killed was around 70 years old. The attacker, who was shot dead by security guards at the station, has been identified as an Israeli Druze man who recently returned from abroad. This type of assault carried out by a member of the Druze community is considered uncommon, given their minority status in Israel, numbering around 150,000 and representing approximately 1.5% of the population.
Witnesses recounted that the suspect arrived by bus from Shfaram, approximately 10 kilometers east of Haifa, and commenced his stabbing spree upon arrival. After getting off the bus, he continued to attack individuals on the station concourse.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences to the victim's family, describing the incident as a shocking act of terrorism. He reiterated Israel's commitment to combat those who perpetrate such violence. Although no specific group has claimed responsibility for the attack, Hamas referred to it as a "heroic" act linked to ongoing tensions with Israel. This incident occurs amid a stalemate in discussions between Hamas and Israel regarding a ceasefire agreement that has lasted six weeks, further complicating an already volatile situation.
