Banja Luka: A Serbian Reflection on U.S. Leadership and the Putin-Trump Alliance
Ethnic Serbs in Bosnia embrace a Russian-centric mindset, celebrating Trump while distancing from Zelensky and U.S. policies.
In a climate where the United States and Europe have denounced Russia's actions in Ukraine, local entrepreneur Sasa Bozic has chosen to commemorate the relationship between the two leaders. He opened the Putin Café in Banja Luka, the capital of Republika Srpska, a predominantly ethnic Serb area in Bosnia and Herzegovina, featuring a life-sized mannequin of Vladimir Putin.
Following recent developments regarding U.S.-Ukraine relations and President Trump's controversial remarks about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Bozic is working on a new venture: a motel and restaurant complex dubbed "Trump and Putin’s Place," set to debut this summer. He claims that honoring these figures is merely a savvy marketing choice for his locality, where sentiments lean heavily in favor of both Trump and Putin while holding a stark hostility toward the American-led international order.
Banja Luka's current political leanings are deeply rooted in history. Established after the brutal ethnic cleansing that marked the Balkan wars in the 1990s, the region reflects a troubled legacy of nationalism and conflict. In the shadows of post-Communism, many within the local community have found refuge in an identity that aligns more closely with Russia's narrative than that of an American-driven Europe.
Bozic remarked that a café named after Biden or one bearing the name of President Zelensky would struggle to attract patrons. “Everyone here likes Putin and Trump,” he stated, highlighting the largely pro-Russian sentiment in the region—a stark contrast to the sentiments of the rest of Europe regarding the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. This local perspective captures the complexities of international relations, showing how distant events resonate differently across borders and communities in turbulent times.
