Thirteen individuals sustained injuries when a car crashed into a crowd of fans outside the Espanyol vs. Barcelona derby match held on Thursday evening. The match, which concluded with Barcelona clinching the La Liga title following a 2-0 win, was briefly delayed as police informed the referee of the unfolding situation.
According to police reports, four of the injured were promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment, but none of the injuries were classified as serious. Authorities reassured the public via social media that the incident posed no threat to the fans inside the stadium.
The driver of the vehicle has been arrested on charges of dangerous driving and causing bodily harm. Eyewitness accounts on social media indicated that the vehicle had stopped between waste bins before accelerating into the crowd gathered outside the venue.
Local officials confirmed that the accident occurred as Espanyol supporters awaited the arrival of their team’s coach. Emergency services responded swiftly, deploying ten ambulances to the scene, and the most critical injury reported involved a broken leg.
Salvador Illa, the president of the Government of Catalonia, who attended the match, remarked on Spanish television channel Movistar Plus, “It was an accident; some people were injured, but not seriously. There are no major incidents to report.”
