In the early hours of Friday, Kyiv and various regions of Ukraine came under significant assault as Russia unleashed a large-scale barrage of drone and missile strikes, resulting in at least four fatalities and upwards of twenty injuries, according to Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko. The violence extended to Lutsk and the Ternopil region, where military chiefs reported unprecedented attacks on their territories.
The grievous loss included three rescue workers who were engaged in emergency operations during the attack. The Ukrainian state emergency service (DSNS) confirmed their deaths and reported that nine other rescue personnel sustained injuries, with some in critical condition. The capital city was under strict air raid alerts, and major disruptions occurred in the train system due to damage to metro tracks from the shelling.
Outside of Kyiv, the military chief of Ternopil described the incident as the "most massive air attack on our region to date," with Mayor Igor Polishchuk confirming that several civilians were hurt and numerous buildings including homes and schools faced destruction. In Lutsk, the mayor stated that attacks with drones and missiles resulted in five additional injuries.
Amidst the chaos, Russia claimed to have intercepted a large number of Ukrainian drones and missiles, asserting it thwarted these threats over Russian territory and in Crimea. This surge in aggression follows a significant Ukrainian drone strike on Russian airbases, targeting military resources effectively.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the use of 117 drones in what was deemed the "Spider's Web" operation, significantly impacting Russia's offensive capabilities.
