Snake Disrupts Japanese Shinkansen Services Amid Holiday Rush

A rogue snake causes power outage, affecting one of Japan's busiest train lines during peak travel season.

In an unexpected turn of events, a snake managed to wrap itself around a power line, resulting in the temporary suspension of Tokaido Shinkansen services that connect Tokyo to Osaka on Wednesday. The disruption began around 17:25 local time, keeping passengers stranded until services resumed at approximately 19:00, as confirmed by Central Japan Railway Company.

The Tokaido Shinkansen line is vital, especially during Golden Week, Japan's peak travel holiday that encompasses four national holidays within a week. With domestic and international travelers flocking to Osaka for the ongoing World Expo, the significance of uninterrupted train services cannot be overstated.

The incident unfolded between Gifu-Hashima and Maibara stations, essentially halting Tokyo-bound trains departing from Shin-Osaka as well as Osaka-bound trains coming from Tokyo. Reports indicate that while staff worked diligently to restore power, passengers flocked around ticket machines, resulting in long queues.

Satoshi Tagawa, a seasoned shinkansen traveler, noted that this was the first time he had experienced a service suspension due to a power outage caused by wildlife. Contrarily, 26-year-old Kazutoshi Tachi expressed his frustration over the recurring issues, calling for more reliable train services.

Interestingly, this was not an isolated occurrence. A similar incident took place in April 2024, when a snake delay lasted 17 minutes during another train journey between Tokyo and Nagoya. Authorities continue to monitor wildlife near railway infrastructure as public interest in rail travel surges.

The unexpected snake encounter emphasizes the challenges that rail companies face, especially during high-traffic periods. Rail travel remains an integral part of Japanese culture, but disruptions due to wildlife can lead to significant inconveniences.

As passengers seek timely and efficient services, railway officials promise to enhance their efforts in managing power lines and wildlife interactions to prevent future incidents.
