Rubio Warns Venezuela of Strong Response Over Territorial Disputes with Guyana

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned Venezuela against attempting to assert territorial claims over resource-rich regions of Guyana, signaling strong U.S. support for Guyanese sovereignty.

In a recent press engagement held in Georgetown, Guyana, Secretary of State Marco Rubio firmly stated that Venezuela would face “consequences” if it attempted to take aggressive actions regarding its claims on territories within Guyana. Rubio emphasized the United States' commitment to defending the region's stability, characterizing the Venezuelan government as a "narco-trafficking regime" undermining international norms.

Rubio appeared alongside Guyana's President Irfaan Ali to address growing tensions, highlighting that Venezuela has intensified its claim over the Essequibo region, which encompasses two-thirds of Guyana's land, including offshore areas abundant in oil resources where ExxonMobil is actively involved in production.

While Rubio refrained from detailing specific measures the U.S. might undertake, he alluded to the formidable capabilities of the U.S. Navy as part of the deterrent. President Ali expressed gratitude for the U.S.'s assurance of protection regarding Guyana's territorial integrity.

The geopolitical climate in the region appears increasingly precarious as the U.S. positions itself firmly in support of Guyana amid rising Venezuelan assertiveness, with both leaders emphasizing the importance of a united front against territorial aggressions.
