A rapid response ensued on Friday afternoon when a fire erupted in an eight-story commercial complex in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, just south of Seoul. Fire officials received alerts around 4:40 p.m. and arrived on site within an hour, facing a chaotic scene with many individuals trapped on the roof, awaiting emergency assistance.

Around 300 occupants were present in the building at the time of the incident. Emergency responders managed to rescue 240 people, while another 70 managed to evacuate themselves. Thankfully, there have been no confirmed fatalities reported; however, nearly 30 individuals were hospitalized due to minor injuries, primarily from smoke inhalation.

Footage from local news channels depicted the lower floors of the structure engulfed in flames, with thick plumes of black smoke billowing from the windows. Individuals could be seen gathering on the roof as they awaited help from authorities. The fire reportedly originated on the first floor, but officials have yet to disclose an official cause for the blaze. Notably, the commercial building includes five underground levels.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of fire safety in urban settings and the crucial importance of rapid response in emergencies of this nature. As investigations continue, the community remains in shock from the events that unfolded on this tumultuous afternoon.
