The move adds to existing levies, aiming to deter India's support of Russia's economy amid the conflict in Ukraine while generating pushback from Indian officials who question the fairness of U.S. actions.

Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on Indian Purchases of Russian Oil
U.S. President Donald Trump's latest executive order introduces a steep 25% tariff on India, raising the stakes amid ongoing tensions over Russian oil imports.
U.S. President Donald Trump has officially announced an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on India's purchases of Russian oil, marking a significant escalation in trade tensions. This tariff will increase the total tariffs on Indian imports to the United States to an unprecedented 50%, making it one of the highest rates enforced by the U.S. government.
The executive order specifies that this new taxation will be effective for goods entered into the U.S. or withdrawn from storage for consumption starting at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time, exactly 21 days from the order's date of issuance. Trump had previously warned of raising tariffs in response to India's disregard for the ongoing humanitarian crises inflicted by Russia's actions in Ukraine, stating, "India does not care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine."
The White House has justified the tariff by asserting that Russia's actions in Ukraine pose a threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy interests, necessitating stronger measures to address what it describes as a national emergency. It emphasized the detrimental impact of India’s importation of Russian oil on U.S. efforts to counter Russia's harmful activities around the globe.
The order reflects concerns that India's import and resale of Russian crude oil helps to fund Russia's military aggression in Ukraine. As part of this initiative, the U.S. plans to evaluate which other nations are importing Russian oil and may recommend further actions to the President as necessary.
The announcement comes on the heels of negotiations by Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow to facilitate peace between Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, Indian officials have reacted strongly against the tariff, deeming it "unjustified and unreasonable." India’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, noted that the U.S. had previously encouraged India to purchase Russian gas to stabilize global energy markets following the onset of the conflict.
India has defended its oil imports, stating that it turned to Russian supplies only after traditional sources redirected their exports to Europe. Criticism also emerged regarding the U.S.'s own trade practices; although imposing tariffs, America continued trading with Russia, with U.S. goods worth approximately $3.5 billion exchanged last year despite existing sanctions.
In response to these developments, India's foreign ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding its national interests and economic security, indicating that India will take necessary measures in light of the evolving geopolitical landscape.
