Cambodia's Embrace of China: Xi Jinping Boulevard's Symbolism and Significance

Xi Jinping's recent state visit to Cambodia underscores the deepening relations between the two nations, as Cambodia leans towards China amid U.S. withdrawal from the region.

Xi Jinping Boulevard encircles Phnom Penh, the rapidly expanding capital of Cambodia, where it has become a symbol of the nation's growing ties with China. This boulevard, named in honor of China's leader last year, connects to a major Chinese-built airport expected to be among the largest globally. Upon Xi’s arrival in Phnom Penh on Thursday, he was greeted by giant portraits and banners, with crowds of Cambodians, reportedly paid for their presence, waving Chinese flags.

The visit occurs at a critical time for Cambodia, as the U.S. government threatens a substantial 49 percent tariff on key exports like apparel while retracting multiple aid initiatives. In contrast, Xi aims to promote China as the principal partner for developing nations, bolstering his stance against a U.S. administration under President Trump, which appears to be retreating from its global leadership role.

Sophal Ear, a political scientist with roots in Cambodia, pointed out the significance of this geopolitical maneuvering: "As the U.S. scales back its footprint in Cambodia, China steps in not just to fill the vacuum, but to showcase itself as the reliable and enduring partner."

Through investments and infrastructure projects, Xi’s tour of Southeast Asia, including previous stops in Vietnam and Malaysia, illustrates China's strategy to assert its influence amid ongoing superpower competition in the region. With the growing reliance on Chinese investments, Cambodia's clear tilt towards Beijing defines its current diplomatic narrative.
